Be prepared for your CDL exam so that you will pass the first time :) 

Note that if you only receive a 3 months CDL certification you will be required per FMSCA to complete another CDL examination at the end of that 3 month time frame. 

Basic stuff 

  • Avoid alcohol the night before, high caffeine products (energy drinks etc), and excessive nicotine the morning of. These can cause temporary increases in your blood pressure and can cause you to fail your exam. 

What to bring

  • Your drivers license

  • A full bladder 

  • Your glasses and/or hearing aids if you have them 

  • $190 or authorization from your employer to bill them directly 

  • Fill out first two pages of CDL forms to save time

Medical conditions with extra requirements 

If you come to your exam without pertinent documentation you will be required to complete another exam in 3 months.

  • Diabetes; You will need a recent (within 3 months) A1c lab on file. Note this needs to be under 10 in order to pass your exam. 

    • If you use insulin you will need your prescribing provider to fill out these forms.

  • Sleep Apnea; You will need a 90 day CPAP usage report on file in order to pass your exam. 

  • Controlled Substances; if you are taking controlled substances your prescribing provider needs to fill out this form for you. 

  • Cardiovascular/Neurologic Disease; your specialist needs to write you a medical clearance to drive. Ex. “ We have evaluated patient and medically cleared them to drive commercial vehicles”.

  • Monocular vision; your eye doctor needs to fill out this form before your appointment
